Searching Links
HLOM's primary purpose in life is to find your links when you need them.
There wouldn't really be any point if this wasn't the case.
Consequently the search functions are pretty powerful, but we've tried to make
them as non-threatening and intuitive as possible.
There are two methods of searching you HLOM account for a specific
link:
Quick Search
Enter a term in the quick search box in the top right. Hit 'Go'. You get the
idea...
HLOM will search your links' Titles, URLs, Notes and Category names for
any phrase or word entered into this box.
If you use more than one word HLOM will only show matches for the whole phrase.
You can use partial words; the search term 'hack' will find links with the category
'hacking' and links that contain 'hacking', 'hacker' etc in their titles, URLs or notes.
Advanced Search
Clicking on Advanced Search will show you what appears to be an empty link detail page.
This is generally most useful when the Quick Search produces a mile-long list. If
you click on a category and hit Search you will only be show links that have that Category,
not links that also happen to contain the name of the Category in their titles.
You can choose to search by any or all of the following criteria:
- Title
- URL
- Notes
- Category
- Date
These criteria allow you to get pretty specific. Which is important when you HLOM account
is up to a few thousand links and your long term recall seems to time out after
a couple of days.
If the only thing you can remember about a site is the fact that
you grabbed the link in the last week, and it was a .net domain you'll
become very familiar with Advanced Search.
Search Results
Search results are displayed in a list. See Settings Menu - Display to alter the
size of this list.
Each item has a button marked 'Detail' that takes you to the links' full detail
page, where you can edit it and view notes etc.
Each item has a button marked 'Open Link' that opens the URL into a new window.
(See Settings Menu - Display to alter the size/type of new window that HLOM
creates.
The 'Categorise' option list at the top of the Result List allows you assign an existing
category to all of the links displayed on the current page.
