HLOM Sharing
HLOM makes is really easy to share links with your HLOM-dependent friends.
You have got all of your friends hooked on using HLOM, right..?
The very simple rules of sharing look like this:
If you know someone's HLOM username you can add them to your Sharing List.
Clicking 'Share' on the Function bar of any of your links lets you choose
who to share that link with.
If someone you don't like gets hold of your username and starts swamping you
with annoying links, you can simply choose to block that user.
The Sharing Menu
The Sharing Menu contains the following:
Links In (0:0)
This takes you to a list of links that friends have carefully selected for
your attention.
The numbers in brackets after links in are the number of new links that have
arrived since you last looked at Links In, followed by the total number of
incoming links that you have already seen and are, presumably, ignoring.
Each item on the Incoming list has a Title and URL, along with details of who sent the
link, when they sent it, and any notes they chose to attach in order to explain/
justify their decision to clutter-up your HLOM account.
There are four options with each Incoming link:
- Ignore it: it'll just lurk there, inert. Waiting
- Accept: This will add the new link to your HLOM repository
- Delete: Make it go away. Be gone.
- Open Link: opens the link into a new window, allowing you make a more informed choice about which of the previous options to choose.
At the top of the Incoming page there are two option lists. The first allows you to choose whether to show just new links, or all incoming links. The second allows you to choose how to order those incoming links.
Links Out
This is simply a record of those links that you have chosen to share with your friends. The list shows you the Title, URL, who you sent it to, when and the notes you sent with it.
Users
This is your HLOM address book. Add a friend's HLOM username in the 'Add User'
box and you'll be able to send links to them. If you do not know someone's HLOM username,
you'll need to ask them. If they won't tell you can't share links with them.
If you give your username to a friend they will be able to send you links. Once a friend
has sent you link they'll know your HLOM username, and can will be able send links back to you.
You can't
send links anonymously, so you can't share links without allowing them to send links
back (whether as a way of returning the favour or in retaliation depends entirely
on the types of links you choose to share). We couldn't think of any reasons that users
would require one-way link sharing. Or rather, we could think of loads of reasons, but they
were all Bad.
Every so often we inadvertently give our email addresses out to someone
who turns out to be an inveterate bad-joke-sharer. Or worse still, a Chain Letter
Enthusiast. You know the kind. HLOM sharing features offer similar opportunities
to those poor souls who have become terminally addicted to really bad Flash Movies.
Given that you can never spot these kinds of people until after the unstoppable deluge of
incoming crap has already started, HLOM sharing includes the ability to block users.
Just one click and you need never see another dancing-kitten-in-bonnet. At least, from that
user... OK, we're only addressing the symptoms and callously ignoring the underlying causes
of Bad Flash addiction, but hey, HLOM just here to store your links...
The Sharing Detail
When you choose to share a link you are presented with a simple page that
allows you to edit the details you're sending.
The Shared Title is set to the link's title by default; you can change it if you
need/want to. Note that this is only the title for the purposes of sharing; the
original Link in your HLOM remains unaltered.
Similarly, Notes contains your personal notes. You can edit/delete the Shared Notes
without affecting your own personal notes.
You cannot edit the URL of the link in the Sharing window. If you really want
to send mangled, non-functioning and truncated links to people you'd be better
off using email...
Select the checkboxes for those user you want to send the link to, click send...
